Work planned for top 20 unsafe roads

SOME of the southside’s most dangerous intersections will be upgraded by the state government before June 30.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace listed 20 intersections statewide that had recorded a high number of crashes during the past three years, including four southside intersections.

The Brisbane City Council-controlled intersection of Grey and Melbourne streets at South Brisbane was ranked the state’s sixth most dangerous with nine serious incidents recorded.

Seven major accidents at the junction of Mt Gravatt-Capalaba and Gateway Arterial roads and the Gateway on and off ramps ranked it the 12th most dangerous.

A planning study is underway to fix the intersection at a cost of $9 million, jointly funded by the federal and state governments.

The council-controlled intersection of Marshall, Bapaume and Birdwood roads at Tarragindi also recorded seven major crashes and will be reconfigured to remove one right-turn lane.

The Tilley and New Cleveland roads intersection at Gumdale recorded six serious smashes, ranking it number 18.

Mr Wallace said the upgrades would be funded through the $3.53 billion set aside this financial year for roadworks.
