Aid goes up in smoke at Salvo house fire

THE Salvation Army has vowed to turn no one away despite losing its Wynnum opportunity shop to suspected arson.

Wynnum Corps Major Kevin Hentzchel said the fire, which destroyed the Akonna St building at 8pm on Saturday, would impact on its ability to provide clothing and furniture to the bayside’s needy.

However, the organisation would draw on funds from headquarters to continue its welfare program.

Major Hentzchel said 163 clients had received assistance with food, clothing and electricity vouchers in February.

The loss of income from the shop is estimated at $1000 a week which went directly to the welfare program.

Evon Bradford, who volunteered 16 to 30 hours a week at the store, said she was “terribly shocked’’ by the fire.

“So much work has gone into it and in addition to that a lot of stock had been put aside for a fashion parade in April,’’ she said.
